As humans, we love to talk about ourselves. I'll try to keep this short.
I was born and raised in Berwyn, IL, made my way to Lisle, IL, then off to DeKalb to earn my undergraduate degree in English Language & Literature with a minor in Psychology. While I had initially been accepted into the Teacher Certification program, it eventually became very apparent that teaching secondary education was not the best suitable career for me. Luckily I had developed and strengthened my writing skills and public speaking abilities, and qualified for a freelance SEO writing gig right after graduating in 2009.
Starting in 2010, I began the journey to putting my skills and education to good use while dabbling into the many industries that the working world had to offer - often at the same time. In fact, I've held no fewer than two positions simultaneously from 2010-2013. During my search for a full-time job, I've gained a plethora of relevant skills, experience, and knowledge about various industries. Unfortunately, these positions didn't quite line up with my career goals; I knew I could do more - I wanted to do more. I just needed the marketable skills to keep up with the competition and the rapid evolution of the digital world. Eventually I decided that graduate school (and another internship) was the next step for me.
What I'm Doing Now
Fast forward to today, as I officially hold a Master of Arts degree in New Media Studies from DePaul University. Not only do I possess skills very relevant in today's digital environment, but I am confident that my collected experience has prepared me for anything that comes my way. Since graduation in 2013, I've been putting my extensive writing experience, new design skills, and event planning skills to good use to produce marketing communication pieces and coordinate events for the housing industry in Chicago.
As far as non-professional aspirations go, I'm a bit of a book worm - I know, big surprise coming from someone with a B.A. in English. But yes, I actually read books and comic books/graphic novels for pleasure (if you're a fellow book worm, find me on Goodreads). Consequently, I very much enjoy watching film and tv adaptations of my favorite literature with my husband and fur-baby. I'm one of those annoying people who countdown series/season premieres and big-screen releases of said adaptations, but I try to avoid coming off as pretentious to those who don't read the literature. Entertainment, in any form, should be fun for all, right?
Another indication that I am self-disciplined and goal-oriented is my somewhat recent interest in running for both time and distance. As of May 2015, I have participated in four 5Ks, one 8K, two 10Ks, one 15K, three half marathons, and completed the entire 26.2 miles (without walking) at the 2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Additionally, my partiality towards the non-profit sector is demonstrated through my participation in running races - thanks to all of these athletic endeavors, I've raised thousands of dollars for various charities, including the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, Les Turner ALS Foundation, and the American Institute for Cancer Research. Feel free toheck me out on Athlinks or Map My Run. I'm not quite sure about what my next physical goal will be, but in the meantime I'm trying to stay in the game.
I love learning about anything and everything, both in my professional and personal life. I'm always excited to meet new challenges and finding more things that I can do. Let's collaborate to find out how I can bring my relevant skills, experience, and strong work ethic to your web communications projects so we can accomplish something together.
